Why My Foodie Swap Was Hilarious

We all love getting comments, emails, likes, and new followers, right? Well today, I’m taking it back to basics and talking about snail mail.

My friend Georgie, InIt4theLongRun blogger and total social media badass, started a Facebook group for bloggers. It’s been an awesome resource! When she suggested a Foodie Swap Box, I was 110% on board. Each participant was assigned another blogger to send a box full of snacks and goodies too. (You can read about my first box here.)

A few weeks ago, I received my second Foodie Swap Box from Brie at Lean, Clean and Brie. I’ve been following Brie’s blog for a while, and it’s been a pleasure to watch her grow as a blogger. 🙂

Deliciousness in Dallas

Have I mentioned that I loveee having visitors in town?!

I’ve been pretty lucky having almost all of my best friends come visit me in Austin in the past year. I love showing people my new city.

Right now, my parents are in town for an extended Labor Day vacation. They arrived last Friday and will be here until Sunday. They’ve been to Austin a few times now, so there’s no pressure to do “touristy” things. It’s been nice just hanging out!

WIAW: Game Day!

It’s been TOO LONG since I’ve posted a WIAW! Thanks to Laura at Sprint 2 the Table for hosting.


Pre-Workout Snack

I almost always have 1/2 banana pre-workout. I find it the perfect amount of energy to hold me over.

My workout was an oldie but a goodie, borrowed from Julie at Peanut Butter Fingers.




Overnight oats! This was ~1/3 cup oats, almond/coconut milk, chia seeds, nonfat plain Greek yogurt, cinnamon, figs, strawberries, pecans, and Kashi cinnamon cereal.



My mini Bento box lunch. Celery and carrots with hummus, low fat mozzarella, a hard boiled egg, and a piece of whole wheat cinnamon raisin bread.

Pre-Softball Snack


We had a company softball game (so fun!) scheduled for 6:15, and I knew I wouldn’t have time to eat dinner beforehand. I enjoyed this Peanut Crisp Oatmega Bar around 3:00.



I was looking forward to this stir fry since the weekend! It’s cauliflower rice (LOVE!), rotisserie chicken, bell peppers, and Lacinato kale. So easy, super healthy, low carb, and totally satisfying.

Other Snacks


Guess who went to Trader Joe’s this weekend! These chocolates are SO YUMMY. The perfect mix of salty, sweet, chewy, and crunchy.


Okay, this was kind of an impulse buy. It’s so random, but so good. Pickle flavored popcorn. It tastes exactly how it sounds!

Unpictured: I had one beer after softball with my colleagues. Our team is pretty awful, but we’re getting better every week, AND we’re having a great time!

Feeling Like The Old Me

This past weekend, I basically opted out of all social activities. And it was exactly what I needed.

After a few months’ worth of making new friends, partying, and exploring the city, I knew I needed a break. Since I’ve given up alcohol for the month of August, I saw this as a chance to revisit what I’d call “The Old Me.”

Old me (think post-college, pre-full time job, living at home) was in the best shape of my life. I spent a lot of my free time at the gym or training for my half. With minimal restaurant options and almost zero desire to “go out” in my home town, being in great shape was, well, easy!

I’m Back! With a 10 Day Sugar Detox

Something has to change, guys.

A few people asked me why I hadn’t posted in over a month (and I love them for noticing/caring). The reason why? I had nothing to say. I would have felt like a phony writing about health when the reality is me eating, drinking, and skipping workouts.

I’m probably exaggerating. Over the past few weeks, I’ve still cooked healthy meals for myself. I’ve exercised 5-6 days a week. I’m conscious of every decision I make, good and bad.

I’ve written before about finding a balance between being healthy and enjoying life, especially in a young, hip city like Austin. So much revolves around eating and drinking.

I can’t feel guilty for enjoying myself. But I still feel like crap. My body needs … something. A reset. A detox. Maybe just a slap in the face. 😉

When Your Day Doesn’t Go As Planned

I am someone who likes plans, lists, and schedules. I take comfort in outlining my to-do list, and satisfaction in checking things off. But some days, things just don’t go according to the plan.

For me, it’s easy to shut down when this happens. But lately, I’ve been trying to roll with the punches and be okay with Plan B.

Wednesday was a classic example of this, over and over. Here’s how it went down, and how I dealt with it.

The Plan: Wake up early and work out.
The Reality: Instead, I chose to sleep in.
The Reason: I was out late on Tuesday, and sleep is just as important as a work out some days.
The Next Step: Plan to fit a workout in later in the day?

The Plan: Eat my salad for lunch.
The Reality: I went to the mall with a coworker over lunch, and chose mall Chinese instead.
The Reason: I’m so thankful for work friends! I typically try to make healthy choices for lunch, but some days you just have to say “yes.”
The Next Step: Save the salad for tomorrow.

The Plan: Fit a workout in after work.
The Reality:  My manager invited the team over for margaritas. Such a sweet gesture!
The Reason: Teammate bonding is important. How could I skip?
The Next Step: Unplanned rest day it is. Get back on schedule Thursday morning!

The Plan: Tilapia, green beans, and sweet potato for dinner.
The Reality:  I got home from running errands 9 PM and was starving. Fish was the last thing on my mind, so I had toast with peanut butter and raw fruits/veggies. Random but awesome!
The Reason: Honor your cravings!
The Next Step: Save the fish for tomorrow and plan to get back on track, meal-wise.

I’ll be honest. When plans change, it throws me out of my comfort zone. But I’m proud of the progress I’ve made in being flexible and rollin’ with it!

Saying It, Living It

It’s all about balance,” “everything in moderation,” and “you only live once!” are phrases that I’ve found myself saying to my coworkers recently. I even went so far as to tell a friend “I don’t perpetuate negative body talk.” I couldn’t believe that came out of my mouth!

Later, I wasn’t sure if I was proud of myself for addressing the pattern I had been seeing, or embarrassed that I sounded self-righteous.

I’ve come a long way in achieving balance in my diet & exercise. I’m still not where I want to be. So it’s not always easy for me to be in an environment that upsets the balance (even unintentionally).

Sometimes people’s conversations at work can be difficult for me. I overhear people lamenting the junk food they ate, pining over the cookies in the kitchen, or discussing their latest diets.

Even if they have the best of intentions, the nature of these conversations can upset me. I start comparing and analyzing what I’m doing as compared to what others are doing.


Most of the time, I try and tune these conversations out. There’s no sense comparing or competing, because everyone’s situation is different. But when I do chime in, I try and add positive encouragement, like “It’s all about balance!”

Now, the hard part is internal: saying it vs. truly living it.

Light and Heavy: Thinking Out Loud

So, I don’t like to post when I don’t particularly have anything health/fitness-related to say. I’ve been pretty quiet lately, so my thoughts have piled up a bit. It’s a perfect time to jump in for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.


I noticed my thoughts are a pretty even mix of heavy and light this week. Either way, it’s nice to get them all out of my brain and into a post. =) Thanks for linking up, Amanda!
