What Christmas Means to Me

Hey, dusty old blog… it’s been almost two weeks since I’ve seen ya. Was it because I got lazy? Busy? Just didn’t have anything to say?

Honestly, it was probably a combination of the three. As I like to say … life happens. Nothing bad, just life. Late nights & early mornings at work, prepping for the holidays, exploring new parts of town, and a 10-day visit from an old friend. All great things that I feel very lucky for.

So, no, I haven’t had much to talk about. I have no recipes to share because I’ve been eating a whole lot of candy, tacos and cheese. I’ve participated in more “holiday cheer” than my kidneys would like to acknowledge. I’ve also done damage control with a whole lot of boring salads, fish and oatmeal – nothing very inventive to share.

I’ll be honest – I’m letting myself enjoy the holiday season as I said I would, and it’s amazing! I bet I’ll gain 5 lbs. I bet I’ll lose it by mid-February. I seriously don’t care.

So instead of staying quiet through my holly jolly holiday prep, I was inspired to share what the holiday season means to me.

What Christmas Means to Me

The holiday season means…

  • Visits with friends and family … which are so precious now that I’ve moved away from home.
  • Traditional foods that only come around once a year … hello, rich and decadent.
  • Baking cookies with Mom  Tollhouse chocolate chip are a must. For Santa, not me, of course.
  • Giving, donating and helping when I can because I know some people have it rough this time of year.
  • Snail mail  don’t hand-written Christmas cards mean so much more than a text?
  • Hot chocolate is necessary … even if I cringe at the ingredients list.
  • Resisting the urge to shop for myself … when I’m supposed to be buying presents.
  • A peppermint mocha latte or two even though my ex-barista persona disapproves ; )
  • Couch time and Christmas movies … everyone’s got their 5 or 6 holiday favorites, right?
  • PJs, sweatpants, and slippers are my uniform … what? I make ’em cute.
  • Wearing a Santa Hat in publicto embarrass my friends.
  • My car radio has 1 preset … ‘The Magic of Christmas’ channel, of course.
  • Putting off my wrapping until the last minute sorry, it’s never been my strong suit.
  • Walking in the door and turning on the Christmas lights … before I even take my coat off.
  • Red, green, silver and gold … have a permanent residence in my wardrobe, my apartment and my fingernails.
  • Spending less energy on ‘things,’ and more on ‘people’ … as cheesy as it is, I’m really feeling what Christmas is really about this year.

Your Turn –

  • What’s something special you treat yourself to around the holidays?
  • Are you more “cookies & candy,” or “salads & fish” right now? (Happy balance of both, here!)
  • What do the holidays mean to you?

By the way – if you’re feeling extra Christmasy, check out my friend Georgie (InIt4theLongRun)’s Chai Gingerbread Smoothie recipe, and be sure to enter her awesome Vega Protein giveaway!

  1. This made me so happy to read! Sending (and I guess receiving) snail mail is one of my favorite parts of the holidays. We always send out Christmas cards as a family but I like to send notes to my friends too. And every year I have the best intention to wrap gifts early AND Pinterest-y with cute decorations. Nope, never happens. Instead it looks like a toddler wrapped the gifts haha

    • Aw, thanks, Emily! Isn’t snail mail the best? This is the first year I sent out my own Christmas cards… I sent them to my high school and college friends and a few old coworkers. Sending them might feel even better than receiving them! =) Haha and ohhh I know … I always try super hard but the paper never *quite* reaches all the way to the other end, haha.

  2. Oh I definitely feel you and support your outlook on the holiday season. Letting go and being less focused on maintaining the absolute “healthiest” diet of salads and fruits and veggies…Cookies and sweet treats have made their way into my days now on a regular basis and I’m not complaining! Have a great week!

  3. I’m so jealous of your Christmas cheer. I’m a bit of a scrooge but not on purpose. The last couple years this time of year is associated with the stress of finals, but I’m looking forward to spending this Christmas with my dad and sister (the first that all three of us will be together since I was 2!)
So happy to hear your lovin’ and livin’ life!

  4. So glad to see you stop in over here! I loved this post! I didn’t know you were a barista before – that was my favorite college job – I worked almost 3 years doing the 5am shift! I smiled through this whole post and just had to let you know it made me that much more excited about Christmas this year.

    • Aw, thanks so much, Sam … I’m so happy it made you happy. 🙂 Haha yes I was a barista for about 6 months.. I honestly loved that job and learned so much about coffee! How’s your latte art game? 😉

  5. I’m glad you’re back! And also, that mug is amazing. I need to find it now, it’s tacky and adorably perfect.

I think all my Christmas loves are centered around sugar. Baking cookies with my Grandma, baking at home because my mom has an amazing kitchen (did someone say cake pops), and lattes with my bff when she returns home. Because she’s a starbucks addict.

It’s worth getting busy over Christmas. 🙂

    • Thanks, Kay! =) Good to be back .. I wanted to wait until I actually had something to say, haha. Isn’t it?! I’m sort of pissed I didn’t buy the mug! Ughhh and I am the saaame way with sugar this time of year 🙂 gotta love it!

  6. It is so great you are enjoying the holidays! These are just a few days of the year that happen to bring so much joy. Letting go is the way to go! 😉

Santa hats are a must! I also love some reindeer ears! Ha! I am definitely on a sweet roll right now. I see cookies everywhere and I can’t help but taste them all. 🙂

  7. THIS. I swear, between all the how-to-not-gain-weight holiday posts and the decadent treat recipes, I almost want to avoid blogs over the holidays. It’s not about what you do or do not eat. It is about celebrating time with family and holiday spirit 🙂

  8. I’m definitely balancing sweets with healthy meals right now (actually I’m talking about this on the blog tomorrow)! Hey, it wouldn’t be fun to be all business and healthy food during the month of December right!? I was just saying that I haven’t seen Elf yet this holiday season — need to get on that stat!

    • Hey Nicole – that’s what it’s all about, right?! Balance ! And I knowww, I’m kind of hoping for a snowy day when I go home next week… it will give me an excuse to watch all the movies I need to catch up on! Haha.

  9. Love this list! I love hearing about what other people look forward to during the holidays, and your list is wonnnnderful! Haha
