WIAW: Throw it in a Bowl

Hi all – Happy Wednesday and Happy October! I say it everyyyyy month, but I can’t believe it’s October already. Time is flying by!

hello-october-2

It’s going to be 90 degrees today in Austin so I’m still missing that traditional “fall” feel, but I’m making the best of it! I decorated my apartment for fall — pics of that coming soon! πŸ™‚ For now, I’m linking up with Jenn (Peas and Crayons) for another lovely What I Ate Wednesday.

So, did you catch my post about The State Fair of Texas? Sunday was a very funky food day with beer, fried things, and a Quest bar in the car for dinner, so I knew this week I had to get back on my health food game.

the state fair of texas is a uniquely southern experience

A common theme of this week’s meals has beenΒ throw it all in a bowl and hope for the best!

This is actually how I would characterize my cooking style most of the time. I try to be mindful that each meal includes a protein, a fat, and a complex carb. Whether it’s my morning oats, a salad for lunch, or a stir-fry for dinner, this formula works super well for me. Ps- if you’re into bowls of random goodness as well, check out Georgie’s post about Buddha Bowls.

Here’s what I came up with this week.

egg white oats with banana and cinnamon warms me right up!

Egg white oats. The perfect carb/protein balance for breakfast, in my opinion. I topped ’em with banana, cinnamon, and Cinnamon Harvest Kashi.

Keepin’ it fresh with a salad — romaine, carrots, celery, cucumber, quinoa, black beans, avocado and pepitas. Not the most gorgeous photo, but I do what I can at work. ; )

Brace yourself for the randomness. Trader Joe’s sweet potato gnocchi, cole slaw veggies with Trader Joe’s green curry simmer sauce, and Trader Joe’s jalapeno chicken sausage. Weird but good, man!

Post-yoga salad topped with PURPLE SWEET POTATO!!!, grilled salmon, Trader Joe’s hummus dressing and balsamic glaze. I am obsessed with purple sweet potatoes!!

And just for fun —

Feeling like fall with a honey nut rice cake, peanut flour/pumpkin butter spread, and candy corn!

Speaking of which — does anyone else feel like candy corn is NOT even that good? And yet somehow, I seriously just shovel it into my mouth like nobody’s business. Ummmmm #yolo?

Serious purple sweet potato lovin’. Can’t stop won’t stop. They’re just so fun! : ) I had it for dessert last night with peanut butter and cinnamon.

The moral of this week’s WIAW story? When in doubt, throw it in a bowl!

Your Turn-

  • Do you throw stuff in a bowl and hope for the best? What’s your best concoction lately?
  • Have you tried purple sweet potatoes?!? I got mine at Sprouts — haven’t seen them anywhere else yet!
